A local medical center along with numerous clinicians have been named in a medical malpractice lawsuit. The birth injury lawsuit asserts that a child suffered permanent disabilities following several medical errors that occurred at birth.
According to the complaint, staff failed to monitor and promptly deliver the child, which resulted in oxygen deprivation and subsequent brain damage. The boy now has spastic quadriplegia and cortical blindness. Spastic quadriplegia is the most serious type of cerebral palsy, affecting all four limbs leading to the inability to use the legs, arms and body.
As a result of these conditions, the child will be unable to care for himself now, or in the future, the lawsuit asserts. Additional errors included the failure of medical staff to recognize signs of distress, and to get a second opinion when they were unsure of the next steps to take. The suit asserts that the University Medical Center could have prevented harm to the child had it properly trained the doctors and nurses who tended to the child. Due to the hospital’s failure to adequately train, the child suffered permanent birth injuries, with damages well in excess of $75,000.00.
