According to a recent study, the United States is the most dangerous place to give birth in the developed world. The study published by USA today determined that each year in the United States 50,000 severe injuries and 700 deaths occurred during birth. Some of these issues were due to maternal risk factors such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension in expectant mothers.
The leading causes of death during labor and delivery include hemorrhaging and severe hypertension. In addition, concerns exist about medical malpractice and whether doctors, nurses and other medical staff adequately communicate with the mother and listen to her concerns. Communication errors are one of the leading causes of preventable medical errors.
The purpose of the study was to improve maternal safety.
